Bought Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits (PS2) used on Amazon today. Should here within two weeks. I've never played it before, but it seemed fairly interesting watching my (now) ex-girlfriend play it way back when it was first released.

My games queue is getting longer and longer. Just in the last month, I've acquired FFX, FFX-2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, A Boy and His Blob, Bushido Blade, and now Arc.

...gonna be busy.

Speaking of bad dialog, or at least very, very bad voice acting, I now have Arc Rise Fantasia. After the week I've had, I think I'm ready to disappear for a few days and jRPG my ass off.

I run into stuff like this from time to time. Usually it's at the end of development, and I'm shuffling some code around; suddenly I move one thing and the whole world goes fubar. Then, an hour later I realize that the piece of code I moved has to occur before everything else, because it inits something important ^_^

I live in Belgium, which is like the world center for music festivals. We have Rock Werchter (which was voted best festival by artists a few times), Pukkelpop (Daft Punk Alive in 2007 for example), Dour (Mike Patton is almost a resident there), Lokerse Feesten (programs old stuff that is still touring, like Sex Pistols and new stuff you don't want to hear, like Snoop Dogg). Then there's like a metric fucktonne of small ones for everything from 3 days of nothing but metal to reggae all day.

Favorite game series for me might be Heroes of Might and Magic. That series really did well at staying fresh and still providing exactly the same experience throughout.

Fixed another bug involving Waypoints trying to link up with other Waypoints that didn't yet exist.
Something so simple, yet when your debugging your checking all this other shit like collision checking and ranges and all this logic.
After an hour of stepping through code I realized the Waypoints were attempting these links before all the other Waypoints had a chance to spawn :P

What's worse is the engine already has a warmup period in place before tossing the player into the world specifically to deal with this kind of problem. I guess this is the problem with multi-year development cycles. You start to forget about features that have been there for ages hehe.

So yeah, I just make the Waypoints do their thing after they all have had a chance to spawn and shit's rockin.

I still need to tweak Waypoint locations and stuff but at least now they seem to be free of bugs. Funny now much terror the visual path stuff revealed.

Sick of working on UI, so I decided to add two new map objects: light halos on the ground beneath traffic signals and street lamps. Just like the lights themselves, they dim down to nothing during the day and only display at full brightness at night. These are more of those hardcoded "Things" I mentioned a few posts back. Nothing challenging (hardcoded shit never is), but it was a nice break from menu hell.

Well that's fixed. Turned out to be an optimization in the collision code trying to be excessively speedy. So not only did this fix the pathfinding but corrected other collision issues as well. Every once in awhile I've had a guy end up below the map. I'm sure we've all seen this happen in one game or another. It's always a shitty thing to have happen. I'm hoping this fix corrected that bug as well. Time will tell.

Screenshot

Back to the real work at hand, I've added a visual radius to the Waypoints as well now. This will help me tweak things further so that the Waypoints I want linking up actually do so.

Now I'm going to spend about an hour checking each one making sure it's good and proper.

Yeah, my GUI code is (I think) pretty flexible and recyclable. And it's complete enough now that all I ever have to do to it is add the occasional feature or tweak here and there (like, say, sliders for option screens or whatever). The big time sink isn't the GUI framework, but the actual user interface itself -- which menus control what aspects of the game and whatnot. Especially in an RPG... I feel like I'm swimming in a bottomless ocean of menus.

The only big thing mine doesn't support is full external skinning, but the handful of routines that actually do the drawing are easy to update, so I've never worried about it. I can swap out the icons and background texture(s), then redo the trim drawing routine and be done with most of it.

Each iteration gets a little more flexible. I do find a feature or two each time around that I wish I had, so I drop it in. But that's a far cry from reinventing the wheel every time. It's one of the only times you'll ever hear me beat on the old "reuse your code!" mantra. GUIs are such a bore to code!

Looking back at my previous work... euw. I wasted a lot of time making the menus for FB :(
