Episode 7 - Sturday, April 5rd, 2008 - 7:00PM EST

Topic ideas
  • Flash: We *still* haven't covered this, so it's still on the table
  • Motive for development: Why are you making games? Hobby? Profit? Fame? All three?
  • iPhone SDK: Lots of talk of iPhone games. Thoughts?
  • Multi-person teams: Have you had experience with it? How did you find a partner? Details!
  • "Developer Eye": How does having some insight into the development process change your perception of commercial games, whether it be gameplay-wise or anything else for that matter?
  • Game dev compos: What are your thoughts on these competitions. How do you approach them? As a break to your "main projects"?
  • Project Multitasking: Discuss how many projects you manage at one time and your experiences regarding having many game ideas that are in various stages of development
  • Pet Project: That project of grandeur that you have or have not started, but definitely haven't completed yet; for now it's all in your mind (or a design doc)

And, bringing in the second appearance of our signature feature: Juicy Tidbits (to be revealed to guests on day of recording)

As always, looking for more ideas.

Flash sounds like something you've been meaning to tackle for a while, so you might want to just work it in now, if only to get it over with. It's a very broad topic, though. Were you just wanting to have a general discussion about flash game dev in general? Or was there a specific direction you wanted to take it? I might have a thing or two to say the "Developer's Eye" as well as Multitasking.

As for suggestions, a lot has been said on the boards and previous podcasts about games we've started and never ended up finishing, but I'd be interested in seeing the kinds of ideas people have come up with and developed in their minds, but never actually started on. I know I've had a few doozies that I thought bloody well brilliant, but never got them going. Whether it's a matter of time or motivation or technical know-how, or even just never managing developing a cool idea into a "complete game" design, it might be nice to get some of these ideas out there. Who knows, maybe someone else will snatch the idea up and make your dream game for you :) This might also deserve its own thread on the boards, if the discussion went well (or if it doesn't get in).

PS
I'm looking forward to what you bust out with for the tidbits. What could it possibly be? It's a mystery. Exciting!

The flash topic was mostly because Adam knows stuff about flash, and there was a big burst of "let's figure out flash" threads. I thought it'd be good to cover, but now that the topics are dead maybe it's not worth it. Then again, covering it might get more people involved and/or interested.

Juicy tidbits isn't always going to be mind blowing, but it should provide some amount of fun for each podcast.

If nothing else, maybe you can write down some points and they could be discussed briefly.

How old is that thing?? My 10 year old iMac has a built in mic that works ok. And I remember the macs I used with hyper studio back in middle school had build in mics that were at least halfway decent; that was like 13 years ago.

My Mac Mini only has a line in port, not a mic port. So i'd eithe rhave to amp my mic to work in it or get a usb mic.

Go with a USB mic. They are so much better. :) Besides, built-in mics do not work very well for the podcast. It's hard to get rid of ambient computer sound w/built in Mics.

I think I'll be around tomorrow evening. The wife has been ill as of late, so I have no reason to venture into town, or leave ;)

Things in the above list I can actually relate to:

- Motive for development
- "Developer Eye"
- Project Multitasking
- Pet Project

Fuck. There is a huuuuge line of thunderstorms directly over my location. If I don't show up tonight, it's because my power is out. Our electrical service has really gone to pot over the last two years. It's like I'm living in Tampa again :(

My power has gone down five times in the last seven days. Two of those occasions were last night... bleh.

If you can make it: great!
If you can't: we'll miss you!
If you show up in the middle: It's cool!
:)

I predicate my appearance on the following:

1) Get linux to boot at all instead of a GRUB device not found error
2) Get video drivers to work again (that took a good amount of time last time)
3) Get ... you know... SOUND to work (which is why I had to reinstall yet again (and again (and again...))
4) Get my headset mic to work in linux
5) Someone to hold me close and tell me it's gonna be ok

The good news is that I already got part 1 done. If I get 3 and 4 done and have trouble with 2, I might show regardless. But I'm NOT SHOWING WITHOUT 5!

Haha. That damn game! We need to do a special edition where Mike and I fight about who's right. I'd win. SMG isn't as great as everyone makes it out be. :X

That was fun and interesting to listen to.

The most emotional moment I ever had with a game was when I first completed The Great Giana Sisters on the C64.

I felt happy for Giana that her nightmare was over but at the same time I was very sad that the game ended. For some reason (I was very young and naive) I had assumed that the game would just magically go on and on and on. I did not expect it to *end*.
So I was sad, as I learned that day that games were not unlimited.
