Episode 10 - Monday, July 7th, 2008 - 7:00PM EST | Note that this is taking place on a *Monday*

Topic ideas
  • Your favorite programming trick, hack, paradigm, etc. Get into depth -- language specific if need be.
  • (Open discussion) Discuss the non-game related influences in your development process
  • Discuss the most difficult problem you've overcome (development-wise)
Note that this recording will take place on a Monday. The regularly scheduled weekend fell on July 4th festivities. I assume that those from the US that usually participate may very well be busy that weekend. This also offers up good opportunity to try out a different day for recording the podcast. Additionally, I have limited the number of topic ideas on purpose to try and make it easier to think about what you want to discuss beforehand. As always, suggestions are welcome, though.

Lastly, I think it might be good to have a newcomer on the show to discuss whatever project they are working on. We have been lacking in personal project updates (even though we tried last time) with the current "cast of characters".

I'm going to ask my girlfriend if I can join, we'll see. She won't like it if I just start talking to you guys while she sits there and stays quiet...

Topic idea: How you keep projects from overwhelming you. Sometimes you don't want to start even if you have to do too much to get started, even for something small. :)

She's already gone home now, so it's not an issue or an option anymore :)

I need to get my mic working now...

it might be fun to try a "significant other" edition for some future edition of the podcast! I'll have to keep that one in mind.

Bean, when are you ever going to join?

Okay, I'm up for all that. Sounds like it'll make for an interesting episode.

Just a reminder that the recording is tonight. As usual, jump on IRC. Also, think about these topics beforehand, if you can. It will make for a better/smoother discussion -- especially the non-game related influences one. While it will be obvious what some of the influences/sources are, I think the real content will come from the "how".

I'm 15 minutes in and I just want to say that if you define behaviors through scripts, then you can have one object in code and not have to add in hard code whenever you want a new type of object. Everything is handled the same way, but its scripts hook into the engine different ways. Just a thought.

I thought of doing that but most behaviors are only a few lines of code so there's not much benefit to be reaped (in my case) by using scripts.

I felt like we had a pretty good set of discussions last night. 'Twas fun.

It was definitely fun. I think only having a small set of topics to choose from makes for a much smoother ride. Having people think about the topics before hand helps, too. Incredibly streamlined. We were done recording in an hour, and I was done editing in about an hour and a half/45. Very good stuff. I hope future 'casts go this smoothly.
