I think what it comes down to is this. DirectX5 has long ago become obsolete. The functions this uses were last supported in DirextX5 (hence the use of DirectX5).

So this relies on proper legacy support, which apparently is lacking.


For some reason Microsoft decided it was best to hide how much physical memory was present. Probably because there is no guarantee how much is addressed VS how much is in use, and the location(s) of the memory being used.

In the right hands (like a lot of things) this information can be mishandled.
But it can also be beneficial when you want to maximize performance by managing video memory for your game.. or simply seeing how much is there.

Kind of funny considering DirectX gets it's name from the idea of giving developers direct access to hardware.

New version of MemStatus is out. It basically just cleans things up for Windows 7. No more dead Video memory info and I fixed a bug or two.
