so, being swamped with work and school, i havent been able to work on any programming projects for the last several months. since i had a 3 day weekend i decided to take up a mini rpg and had my friend Deleter come up with a concept. he came up with the idea of feuding vampires that can turn into spectral form. the story takes place on a vampire's manor to include the house, a garden maze, library and dungeon. the game is about 1/2 way complete and will hopefully be wrapped up either this weekend or the following weekend. here's some pictures

http://syn9.thingie.net/download/gothic/under_library.png
http://syn9.thingie.net/download/gothic/courtyard.png

spoiler! this is a full view of the garden maze... minus enemies
http://syn9.thingie.net/download/gothic/maze.png

the character has 2 weapons, a sword and a crossbow.

the maps currently do not have shadows implemented... but i'll prolly put in minimal shadowing at the very end to help make the maps look less flat

Cheers!

Will this be an action/rpg like The Griffon Legend?

Graphically this seems to have better contrast where it needs it than Griffon Legend, which had a lot of contrast between pixels but it was sometimes difficult to discern what was wall and what was floor ^_^

I have misgivings about large maps, but I see you're good at providing a lot of variance in things like foliage, which is immensely beneficial. These being WIP shots, I will assume you'll be populating the maps with goodies to encourage exploration.

Also, holy hell at that maze.

yup, action rpg, but no jumping this time =]

yes, the 2 main enemies for the outside areas have not been sprited yet, nor have the powerup items. also ive only put enemies in the main area of the library for testing combat. thats why the other areas are barren =]

I wonder what would happen if he teamed up with Darkdread for a mini-rpg?

The universe might not be able to contain all that awesome.

The rain looks nice, too. Is the actual game going to feature a smaller or zoomed in window, or is that the size of the screen we'll get? I only ask because we're not used to having that much real estate visible at once, so it's something worth noticing.

good point, my scaling formula was off. it should look roughly like this for all resolutions... minus the stuff in the upper left

This is pretty pimp for a 3-day-weekend style project. At least, it looks pimp. Will be nice to see it in action!

So, another busy week with school and work has gone by. Work has been progressing very slowly. It would be so nice to have another 3 day weekend so I could hammer this out real quick. I put in the 2nd to last baddie and sprited the 2nd boss. Also, I've gotten the dialog system in place and I'm hoping to get some decent work done today, possibly scripting the enemy attacks and adding item pickup.

Thanks Sirocco!

i've made some good, steady progress over the last two weeks. i've put in all the attacks for the 5 basic enemies. now i just need to put in the attacks for the first two bosses and the game will be half done.

Lightning bomb going off after a "Squishy" monster gets hit by an arrow:

i'm going to try to make a valiant attempt to enter this into pov's ludum dare compo.

Any chance of seeing this in motion? I like the art style.

I use Camstudio, but I can't really say whether it's great or not. The price is right, at least ;)

I've been using Fraps for ages although lately it's been giving me issues with the framerate. I'm not sure if it's due to it being an oldass version or something with my game.

I use Fraps as well. Latest version, or close to it. No complaints.

Yeah, Fraps is great. I do 1080p capture to an unfragmented drive. Works well.

I need to try Fraps out again. I remember it used to not play nice with Allegro, so I had to look elsewhere.

Edit:

Oooh, yes. Fraps finally works with Allegro apps. Hooray for progress, no matter how small ;)
