Set on a planet made of gold. Encapsulated by a giant machine in the sky(It surrounds the entire planet).

This is what I have so far with the graphics- basically just trying to develop a look to it. It's not much right now. It just shows the platformer-style part of the game (i'll be mixing genres).
feel free to ask any questions..

Mixing, as in "when I'm outside it's a platformer, but when I'm inside it's like a top-down RPG explorer"? Or am I getting the wrong idea?

Just rambling for a moment.

Obitus was a really weird (and poorly executed) game that had three different parts: a 1st person Eye of the Beholder part, a 2D side scroller reminiscent of Shadow of the Beast, and a 2D/3D hybrid part. It felt like the game had three different designers ;)

Yes, something like that.
There will be the platformer style for traveling through the world and talking with npcs etc.
I don't want any enemy to be expendable, so all characters in the game will be important and you'll only be able to defeat them(not kill them).
You'll enter into Fighter-style mode(like street fighter, king of fighters, samurai showdown)..
Then there will be like a puzzle element to the game, which will be tied into the machine elements that will be involved with the story.
I'm also tossing around an idea for a space-shooter stage as well but not sure yet..

It looks cool so far. I bet gold isn't the east backdrop to contrast sharply against, but your tiles stand out effectively against it. The world in the sky / world on the ground thing sounds you could incorporate a number of space shooter sections, as you fly your ship from docking stations on the ground up to the ring and back for quests and things.

yea.. The world in the sky isn't really a world though. I like to think of it as just a big machine. It basically represents/fills all of outerspace.. there's no way out of it.

The art style here is very nice so far. Interested to see what this turns into.

So what's the catch here: that is, what's the one aspect of this game that really lights your fire, making it an irresistible project to work on?

I don't know.. I'm just working on it to get my mind off stuff, but I suppose it's just like any other game I work on- I have a few ideas that sound interesting enough to explore to see how it fits together and I'll probably grow tired of it eventually and I probably won't finish it. I guess my curiosity can run dry quickly.
Maybe I'm just trying to mask my other problems with this project, like some sort of escapism mechanism, or maybe I'm just trying to put feelings into some tangible outlet so I can feel like I'm in control. But I guess I'm not.
so yea, I don't know.

When I feel like I have to do stuff to distract myself from problems I try to go for a long walk (minimum 2 hours, preferably until I'm too exhausted to continue walking).

Have you tried purple vegetation (or any other colored vegetation)? The green seems a bit too... normal for the concept.

I certainly love it so far. I'd push the shadows towards red a bit more to get a bit more hue spread.

Good to see that you haven't lost your skills :). The vegetation looks yummy.

It certainly has a little Roger Dean flavor to it. And that's a good thing.

thanks. Gil, I'm hesitant to push it towards the red because that might make it appear a bit mars feeling. I have ideas of some underground scenes where there could be lava though which could warrant more red.
Sirocco, I looked at Roger Dean's work, since I'm not familiar with him. It's a bit interesting, maybe I can get some inspiration from it.
sonrisu, I envision their being like streetfighter/samuraishowdown/kingoffighter type battles with other characters that live in the world. And also a puzzle element to the game utilizing machine/robot stuff..
I may hold off on this platform stuff and focus more on the puzzle stuff. I could easily make the puzzle thing it's own game, so makes more sense to make that priority. Even if that becomes it's own game, I could reskin it and throw it into this. or who knows.. :P
I'll post more about the puzzle thing when I have more fleshed out. It's one of those things that is really simple to copy so I'm hesitant to show it until most of it is complete.. perhaps I shouldn't be scared of that though.

You actually already answered my question in an earlier post. Somehow I totally glossed over it! Oops.

:P yea..

I'm wondering what you people's thought are on sharing development progress for really simple ideas that can be copied. Is it better to leave them under wraps so that nobody copies it before you finish the game, or should people share the progress? Who knows.. maybe its been done already :P

Most good ideas need to be proven before people rip them off. Hence cloning.

What PoV said. Also, the bar at which people will start considering something steal-worthy is higher that one would think. That's my experience at least.

On topic: I reeeallly like the art direction!! Your capabilities doing pixel art are amazing! Can't really give any more constructive criticism as your art-making outclasses my art-understanding by a magnitude. :-)

edit: the tree!! Look at that tree! I almost wanted to reach out and touch it, it's so vivid.

Again slightly off topic: I think with a little more motivation and determination, you'd rock this project! Right on!

thanks..
I spent the last few days sorting out some issues with puzzle stuff.
The puzzle allows the player to move multiple puzzle-pieces at the same time and you can customize the organization of them before you move them.
Obviously I have to make a lot of exceptions to rules for whatever you come up with so it won't break the game or allow you to cheat, etc..
I've pretty much sorted it now I think.
This is just one of many ways of moving pieces.. I have a few other ways that need to be implemented as well, but I think those will be easier since those will involve only moving one piece at a time I think.
muahahaha.. *shifty eyes*
