Been playing around with a new pixeling tool: http://twilightedge.com/mac/pikopixel/

Instead of just thinking about pixeling more (or, more appropriately: at all) I actually opened it up and started messing around.

2x/3x:

If I were to display in a game, it would be at 2x. 3x supplied just for looking at details. It's hard to make out the eyes. I'm happy with the outcome, though, considering I haven't pixeled anything since Neverfall. This is probably 30-45 minutes of messing around. Seems like a lot for something so basic, but that's just how it went. :]

I find that when I first start pixeling after a long break (or even short one) it takes me some time to get warmed up. Usually whatever I do that first evening ends up getting tossed :)

I'm the same way with my sketchbook. I need a day to practice, then the next day I can make decent stuff.

This looks like pixen, but simpler (and free). I Dig it. Saves as png too.

No spritesheets though. I need to learn imagemagick, I think you can do spritesheets with that thing.

I used to use pixen back when it was being actively developed by OpenSword. Once they ditched it I moved on.

I'm ok without sprite sheets for this. I don't mind compiling those myself. I have a separate tool to build up animations and bounding boxes, anyway.

Now this reminds me I need to sprite something else... :]

Hah, I love the old-school feel of that thing. Although I did break it a couple times, obviously a few bugs to iron out!

Tuesday... a desire to create, an empty canvas, an empty mind. Pain. Direct to ink lines slapped onto the white sheet of paper, no construction, no plan, just raw doodling. A wonky abomination emerged. Called it Muturtle and then turned it into a pixelling exercise.

ah, yea that looks weird. You could also try using your left hand to draw if you're right handed, or try closing your eyes and drawing.. or some other way to make things difficult/confusing. You end up with unexpected results that can be interesting if you don't have anything specific to draw.

~3h of practice per day during September (working with the book 'The Natural Way To Draw' by Kimon Nicolaides)... huge image is huge:

First month of 'daily composition', also an exercise from the Nicolaides book. Goal is get good. Each daily composition should be a scene from memory(or imagination) scribbled onto the paper without any tools except for the pencil itself for 5 to 15 minutes showing people inside environment interacting with it or with each other somehow. I'm sure I took up to 30 minutes for some of these because it's really easy to get carried away.

Keeping it up isn't easy at first. I'm noticing a bit of a slowdown already which is nothing new though, phases of high activity always came and went in the past. The trick that is supposed to make it work is to just do it and to keep doing it until it's habitual. Or what worked best so far for the current phase was a quote I read somewhere by William Wordsworth: To begin, begin.

It also helps a lot to have a local art group to meet once a week. For motivation. People, no matter how reclusive and hermitty(talking to myself), are still social animals and doing things in a group can be a huge motivation boost.
