Yep. You can make room for glasses (see the knob on the sides), but it lowers your FOV. If you're near-sighted, you might be able to just take them off. The original Rift Kit included 2 extra sets of lenses for different eye types. I'm not sure anymore though, since I was lasered more than a decade ago.

But certainly, sharing a headset is something that might follow headphones: In the early days, you shared. Nowadays, you typically have your own.

I can see it happening. While you can easily get headphones at < $10, there are plenty of nice/good pairs that run a few hundred. If VR units were sub $200 and had major/wide support, I could see this happening.

Was actually thinking about selling my Rift DK1, as my DK2 will arrive sometime during the summer. Then a friend got talking to me about the original Rift as a collectors items. I dunno, I'm undecided. I'll be packing it away very soon (moving), and I don't think I'll ever unpack it. So *shrug*.

Speaking of rift, here's a silly contraption someone made.

Too much. ;)

Actually a friend convinced me I should probably hang on to it. It's true I may never use it again, but like my first computer (the Commodore 64) has value to me now (I have 3 now, and I keep one set up always), the Rift is the one VR headset that should be remembered as when VR stopped sucking. All PCs I've had between the C64 and now have been disposable, but I cherish the C64, likely because it was my first. I don't think I'll necessarily have the same relationship with the original Rift, but I do have a collection of old stuff. Practically speaking that collection would be incomplete without the original Rift. All older VR headsets can go to hell.

Plus I paid way-too-fricking-much to get it over the Canada/US border (like $150...). FedEx, you suck.

VR really is different. It's the only place where literally riding a carnival style ride is compelling content. No way a gamer would pay $20 for a non VR version of this.

There's just something about it being only your head though. I feel like if you're going to show my arms when I look down at them, my arms in real life should be tracked into VR space. It just seems so disconnected. Then again, I haven't tried one -- so perhaps it's not that big of a deal.

Seems like it is, from my limited experience, though. :]

So my Rift DK2 showed up today. I think the best way to describe it is HOLY FUCK!

If you've seen the original DK1, the most notable changes are position tracking (you can actually lean over/forward/etc), low persistence (no more blur/smearing when you turn your head), and the resolution is now high enough to read text. Certainly there are more (even lower latency, 75 FPS), but those are the headliners.

For reals, I'd say that the experience in the HMD (Head Mounted Display) is consumer ready. Holy heck! It's really incredible seeing everything working together beautifully. Wow man, just wow. Again, I'm talking what you see (the experience), not necessarily the effort needed to setup and run things.

The problem now is input... And unfortunately it's a big problem.

That aside, I'm shocked really. The DK2 really makes me think that the HMD problem is finally solved. There is plenty of room for improvement, but real VR entertainment can finally begin.

Summer 2014: Shit gets real.

Super stoked :D

When do you suggest we get in on this? First consumer release?

Completely blown away with this. IT'S THERE. THIS ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE VR. Head tracking, hand tracking, stereoscopic VR vision. Man, this is all so exciting.

That'd be hella sweet. The tracks would all need to be redesigned to accommodate the different perspective (cockpit view versus behind and overhead).

Yeah totally. Leave it to Nintendo (Namco?) to get me interested in VR again. ;)

It's still just too much kit to have in a home setting though. That's the major problem for me. Maybe a good fit for this kind of thing would be a resurgence of arcades?

I am imagining what a full VR setup for VirtualOn would be like.... :]
