So I did a thing last night with Ludum Dare.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/

Alongside the results for LD30, I posted a video where I basically explain its a lot of work and I would like to get paid. That way, I can do more. Maybe we can then get a website that doesn't look like it came out of last decade. ;)

I don't know if we're going to be newsworthy, but hey, it's worth mentioning anyway.

If any journalists decide to investigate Notch's Letter, they'll be able to make some fun accusations. Our timing is hilarious. :D

I really like the way you are approaching the situation. I'm interested to see what monetization concept(s) you come up with. Good luck! :)

If monetization fails, another option would be trying to find volunteers and splitting the workload a bit or automating it as much as possible but well... the automation code would require some initial work again, so maybe you could try to have a one-time fundraiser for a start where you collect as much money as you think you'll need to develop something which would greatly simplify the work required in the future.

Yeah, lump sum and a Patreon in the short term. And since people will lose interest in sinking money in us, we over the next while evolve in to taking sponsorships and other sustainable large sums. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, so I'm optimistic. :)

I was a little turned off by the video in the beginning, just due to the presentation-style qwerkiness, but then I started feeling it, and then it seemed fine because I realize the context.
But yea, I guess you should do whatever you have to do in order to continue running it, at least you're looking through the options, etc, and trying to looking down the line. It's tough making a living off of things that are a hobby/part-time thing at first, so if you're able to make it a full time thing, then that's what I class as being successful.

Patreon seems like a perfect fit for this. I wish you all the best :)

I've been wondering when you'd either turn the reins over to someone else with more time, or just go "all in" and make it your thing.

I have some folks campaigning to take over the website from me, which is a bit awkward.

When things grow there's more room for divisions.

This is a good idea. I guess the main idea is sponsorship of some kind? Kind of like how certain sports events are sponsored by nike, and they can put their corporate logo in the background so it shows up of the TV footage.

I was trying to think about who the main audience of LD actually is. I often hear about entries just on the grapevine even when i'm not hanging around here, so it must have a wider range than just devs like us?

I'm working on a video on that, but actually I first want to see if the community can (and wants to) cover it. After that yes, sponsors are kind of the middle/evil option if that doesn't work. Long term though, making it a proper non-profit/charitable organization might be an option too. It's preferable to the annoying sponsorship option, but a lot more work and upkeep.

I do an entry to the LD #29 for the first time. I didn't had time to do test any game nor comment any game, so I didn't get too attention to my entry, but it was cool.

Unfortunately I can't help you. I can just hope you can follow with it.

Sounds good! This probably sounds obvious, but it might be a cool idea to release info on how much each LD costs to host, plus projected costs for your salary, so any donors know how much needs to be raised each LD cycle for the project to go ahead. I hope this works out for you, because LD is cool.

Side thing, Steam launched their curator system (how they plan to fix "the discovery problem"), so we had to jump in on that.

http://store.steampowered.com/curator/537829/

We're currently a Top-70 (almost Top-60) curator on Steam (of almost 3000). You can currently find us on Page 7: http://store.steampowered.com/curators/#p7

This morning we were in the Top 60.

Thanks to an RT by Total Biscuit, we're now in the Top-50!! :D

That's almost soon enough that people aren't sick of reading the descriptions. :D. Plus some folks appreciate seeing a TAC-2 joystick on Steam. :D

Trigger pulled.

Asking for $3000 /mo, but going to work for 3 months no matter what.

http://ludumdare.com/compo/

Honestly, I'm really not sure how viable this is, but the people asked for it, so here we are.

This portrayal of people offering to help with this allegedly huge website problem is a huge bummer. I think we are all on different pages about what LD is and what it needs -- when you say the website needs help and costs a lot and it will take months to redo, people offering to solve that with their own time is hardly them trying to steal from you.

I don't know anything about the situation, really. I just see someone campaigning to take on donations to upgrade and maintain the site full time, and continue running the event, and others suddenly stepping up to do the same.

Yes, I'm cynical enough to question their motivations from my uninformed standpoint.

No no no. Most people genuinely want to help out. I'm not talking about them. There was a bad egg that was basically pushing "no, just give it to me". I made the mistake of responding to him, but I stopped. It's just a reminder that, taking this next step, I'm going to have to learn to deal with trolls (both emotionally and actually). Gotta keep my cool. ;). This is part of when you "get real".

Half my problem is that it's really hard to really to communicate exactly what happens if I work on Ludum Dare full time. Hence why I've decided to just do it, whether I can afford it or not. I could tell you, and I probably still will from time to time, but I could also show you.

So that's what I'm up to. I'm going to show everyone what Full Time Ludum Dare looks like. And hopefully, I can blow some minds. ;)

Kudos for putting your time and money where your mouth is, and I hope that things work out as you hope, or at least propel you onwards to better and brighter things.
