Wow, I was a month late this time. Sorry!

I also finally fixed the CSS on my site. Hopefully it works now? :]

Buggy css is like abstract art. Your site unfortunately will be left behind, sadly stale in its perfunctory correctness as the latest trends leave you far behind!

Oh look, it's autumn already... this year... it needs to slow down!

Fuck. Now I'm stuck with an old single core CPU and 1.5GB RAM and no access to all my data (all on the other machine which I don't dare to boot anymore until the replacement video card arrives). It chokes to death even I just open three tabs in Chrome... (I blame shitty modern programming practices for that).

Well... maybe I could do some drawing practice or something while I wait for the elves to deliver a new card.

Running the broken machine without a video card at the moment, using ssh and sshfs to work with my files. :D

Interestingly, the C function rand() does not seem to produce the same pseudo-random number sequence on both machines, even if seeded with the same value. That's bad. Well, depending on what one wants, it might be good, but e.g. for a networked game, where one might think it might be enough to share the seed with the other clients, so that everyone can generate the random numbers themselves instead of transferring all that extra data, it is bad.

I'm far away from writing a networked game but I will need to find a pseudo-random number generator which produces consistent, platform independent results (when given the same seed).

If you don't already, I highly recommend using some sort of version control (everybody these days loves GIT. BitBucket has free private repos). Once you get in the groove, you just won't have to worry about losing access to your files.

Ironically, I am already using GIT but with local repositories on a different physical harddrive but which also sits inside the other machine, hehe, and I routinely backup everything to an eSATA disk.

For the moment ssh and sshfs work well.

Gitlab also offers free private repos (we used them for NOOP stuff).

The art style seems to suggest it is not 80s or 90s but much more recent.

Yeah, Aprill 2015, IIRC.

Love the music on that one.

Hmm. Hostgator's prices have gone up. Kind of surprised they lasted as long as they did without making a change. Now to consider whether I should move to some new host or not...

Hmm. :]

http://buyshared.net

I'm running my blog and junk folder on one of those now.

That said, I do VPS servers now (full unmanaged mini linux servers for cheap). If you're feeling fancy:

http://digitalocean.com -- Good machine starting at $5 /mo
http://vultr.com -- More RAM, less HDD space for $5 /mo, and slightly cheaper above that (the eternal sale?)
http://linode.com -- Great value in the higher tiers ($10+), very fast hard drives, wow. New LD is running on a pair of these.
http://scaleway.com -- Insane value, a truly dedicated server, but the servers are ARM and not Intel (not that big a problem, but I'd recommend only for advanced users). 2 GB of RAM, 50 GB SSD space, for under $5.

And once your account is set-up, you can create or destroy a brand new server on demand in just a couple minutes.

I was at blizzcon this weekend. Pretty fun! While there wasn't a lot of D3 coverage due to every other game getting massive updates, I am quite excited about the new patch.

Picked up some swag. Will post pics later once the goodies are up on display. :]

Cool! I've always wondered about that. How big was it this year, in terms of attendance?

Oh, that's unexpected. I watched parts of the keynote online (meh), a bunch of the Starcraft 2 WCS finals (#ArchonModeFTW).

It was really packed! Doing anything at all consisted of waiting in lines. That's expected, I suppose, given its a convention. I really enjoyed meeting the teams for all the games, getting stuff signed!

Overall, very positive vibe. Lots of demo machines to play all the games. Cool giant statues of characters (but I've seen all those already before at Blizz HQ).

Starcraft championship was also very fun to watch live. :]

[edit] I think it was something like 25k attendees.
