It looks like a boat to me due to the shape. In fact, I think monkeys faring the scary seas sounds pretty awesome. Maybe you should do that, instead of a house. :)

Nice. What are those little grey things next to the tree trunks? They look like monochrome dinosaur eggs.

I think they are supposed to be tombstones. Just my guess as it is "A Spooky Forest."
And as said by others here, looking good. More indeed. =)

Yep, supposed to be tombstones... kind of hard to fit detail into them with ASCII, though now that I think about it I could just throw the actual letters in there... :P

I think the tombstones might be a bit too round. They look like giant moons :) I'd suggest trimming the outermost columns and it should look a lot more rectangular. Might help... might not. Heh.

Otherwise... YES.

Yeah, I think combining this with your idea of adding the letters RIP or whatever would help. You could make them varying shades of gray so they look inconsistent and worn, but still legible.

I'll see what I can do with the tombstone. I'll try to make it look less like a dinosaur egg. ;)

I might try to put another demo out in the vague future. I've been working to add some new enemies lately; with more enemies comes more purposeful gameplay.

I use php/mysql for the site.

I'm worried about rendering the gentle curve of a banana with big ascii characters, but I'll see what I can do. :)

I've been working on adding new objects to the worlds in the game, and I've added a couple of new effects. In addition I've been occasionally expanding the scripting engine. Keep your eyes open... I might have a demo in the next 2 or 3 days...

Okay. I have Demo 2 ready.

Source version - http://www.psyguygames.com/demo2.tar.gz (~2MB)
Windows binary - http://www.psyguygames.com/win_demo2.zip (~5MB)

For the source version, just run main.py.

For the binary, run ascii game demo 2.exe. Unless I called it something different. :P

Known Issues

1 - If you get to the end of level 2 and you don't trigger the loading of level 3, just right-click on an empty area and load map "d2 level 3.txt." I haven't figured out why it doesn't sometimes work right by default.

2 - Enemies sometimes don't damage you. Is this really so bad? :P

3 - Spider crash. Don't touch the spider or the game sometimes will crash. If this happens, you can just load map to whatever level you were on previously...

I hope you enjoy the demo. :)

I think you forgot a few steps in there...

    1. First, install Pygame
    2. For the source version, just run main.py
    3. ...
    4. PROFIT!

edit: I was using the wrong installed version of python.

New problem:
Console wrote:

Oh, sorry. Are you on linux by any chance? You could just install python-pygame. You would also need pyopengl ... that's just python-opengl.

If you're not on linux, you could get pygame at pygame.org... as for pyopengl... it looks like http://pyopengl.sourceforge.net is the place to get that.

Of course anyone on windows can just grab the binary download...

sorry, I edited my message right after you posted a response. I think I'm realizing that I have several different versions of python on my laptop. Macports installed 2.4 and 2.5, and then Apple has at least one version in the path that's buried in a framework. I'm going to make sure everything is using the same version and try again.
